Personal branding is not just for business anymore
Bottom line, personal brands that fail have forgotten that the brand must come first. They’ve forgotten their core business, who their Target Market is, and how to remain true to these two things. What better way to understand this dynamic than to remember some of the best celebrity brands?
Opera Winfrey, Marthe Stewart, Barbara Walters, and Steve Jobs are a few examples of celebrities that hit the nail on the head in terms of personal branding.
A personal brand is not the same as a party.
Brand Obama knows the difference between his brand and the Democratic party. As a consummate brand manager, you can bet that he’s going to take every opportunity to underscore that difference.
In fact, he did exactly that.
When President Obama signed the massive new stimulus package into law, he held the signing in Colorado, not Washington. Now that’s a message that the Democrats had better not ignore — the stage wasn’t cluttered with politicians.
Brand Obama is proclaiming (just like Brand Reagan did) that he is not of Washington and takes action with the people and for the people. He was saying, “It’s not about you politicians in Washington; it’s about us folks in the heartland and what we need.” He took personal branding seriously.
In short, these people took their brands seriously, and this has made all the difference. That means that whoever you are and whatever you do, you’ve got a brand that can grow if you’re willing to take your brand seriously too.
